We’ve had a few customers ask us about how to lock through a dam. On the Ohio River, we have the Markland dam which is located about 60 miles downriver from Cincinnati and about 35 miles on the upriver side, we have the Meldahl dam. Locking through the Markland dam gives boaters access to things like Louisville, the Vevay Wine Festival and the Madison Regatta. If you head upriver and lock through the Meldahl dam, you can head to beautiful Maysville KY, Manchester Island or the Shawnee State Forest located in Portsmouth Ohio. One of the great things about the Ohio River is it allows you to do some exploring and take a trip to head to a new place. Unless you trailer your boat to these places (not near as much fun!), you are going to have to learn how to go through a lock. Here is a link to a website forum that gives you good directions along with some pictures. We also have a video posted on the video section of LoddersMarine.com. Locks and dams can look intimidating, but like most things, once you experience it, you’ll find it’s actually pretty simple!
